Edgar the Elephant

My sister-in-law loves elephants, so I made her this cake for her birthday recently:

He was made using a pattern from the Wilton website. Here are some photos of the process....

It all starts with a 3D teddy bear cake.

Then you stick in the extra bits....

And start icing!

Ta-da!

Golf cake

Today I made a cake for my father-in-law's birthday. He's really into his golf, so the obvious cake choice was a golf theme.

I used the Wilton Sports Ball pan set to create the following. It's a chocolate cake, with choc-mint buttercream covered in plain fondant. Smoothing fondant over a sphere was a bit of a challenge, but I was quite pleased with the result - as was the recipient, which is all that counts really!

Til next time!!

Choc-mint cupcakes

Chocolate and mint is one of my favourite combinations. In any form, these two flavours just go so well together. So I decided to make some choc-mint cupcakes for a work morning tea. The cake is a rich, dark, moist chocolate cake (almost flourless), and the icing is just mint flavoured buttercream with chocolate chips added. Shame the piping didn't work so well - it was getting late and what was supposed to be cute swirls of icing turned into big ugly blobs. Oh well. Still tasted awesome!!

Pooh cake

A work colleague of mine returned to work in June 2009 after having some extended sick leave. As a welcome back pressie, I made a Winnie-the-Pooh cake.

He's made out of lemon packet cake, and I flavoured the buttercream icing with a little lemon juice. Yum yum! I also added a little icing bumble bee to the middle of the "hunny" pot (which is an enormous chocolate brownie).

Here's to Pooh!

Random cupcakes

During June and July 2009 I made several random batches of cupcakes for a couple of events: a Tupperware party and my sister-in-laws house-warming.

Red velvet cupcakes with cream cheese frosting and heart sprinkles:

Vanilla packet cupcakes, with fresh strawberries and cream cheese frosting, decorated with fondant strawberries:

Vanilla packet mix cupcakes, with vanilla butter-cream frosting. Decorated with imprinted fondant and fondant butterflies.

I love cupcakes. Yum yum.

The cake that started it all

This is it. This is the cake that started my cake decorating obsession. Don't get me wrong - I have always loved baking. I just never bothered to decorate anything before devouring it!

This cake came about because it was Easter-time and my husband had been going on and on about his favourite Easter egg - a large 3D chocolate Freddo. So I set off to buy him the Freddo only to discover that Cadbury had stopped making it! Hubby was very disappointed. I decided that I was going to try and get him a 3D Freddo. Thus the cake idea was formed.

I had never done any decorating at all prior to this (well except for putting sprinkles on cupcakes as a child).

The cake was constructed using a simple chocolate packet mix and the Wilton 3D bear tin. I used vanilla buttercream to ice the cake.

The cake a big success. Hubby had a great big grin on his face as he sliced Freddo's head off!!
